Lesson from Kay at Ocotillo Golf Resort

Kay from Ocotillo Golf Resort is working with me on a drill called "Shaft on Shoulder" which helps my shaft plane and also reduces tension in my arms.

Golf in Roatan

My wife and I went to Roatan Honduras for a week.  I played the course there twice and it was a beautiful, well kept course.

Beautiful par 3, island green on 12.

Eagle from 150 yards!

I hit one in from 150 yds on a par 4 at Ocotillo!  It was hole #1 on the Gold course.  The flag was in the middle left part of the green.

Had a golf lesson today with Kay from Ocotillo Golf Course. Her main feedback was that I am too tense.

She gave me some things to work on:
1) Brush the grass - This is where I do short swings back and forth brushing the grass. This is meant to help relax my arms, and I should try to feel an even pressure of both hands on the club.

2) Orange Whip - Kay suggested I get an orange whip, but I canalso use my aiming sticks. Something to swing back and forth with a full swing and get used to a tension-free swing.

3) Swing without a club - Take a normal grip, get in posture, and then drop the club. Do a full swing without the club. This also tends to teach me to be more relaxed throughout the swing.

Other tips:
-Put a 2x4 on the ground in front of my ball. I tend to hit the 2x4 directly on takeaway because I've been trying to take the club to the outside on the way back.
-Use a normal arc on the take away, and don't have the stiff, club face looking at the ball type of takeaway because that causes me to tense up, and get off balance.

Day of Firsts

Sunday was a day of 'firsts' for me:
  • It was my first tournament in the Golf Channel Am Tour.
  • It was the first time I played at the Raven Golf Club at Verrado.
  • It was the first time I hit myself with my own golf ball so hard that it created a bruise.
Yes, you heard me right.  I hit myself with my own ball during play so hard that it stung, and I now have a bruise to show off my golf skills.  It hit me in my chest just right of my right collar bone.  I was playing out of a desert lie and the ball hit a rock, came directly back at me and "SMACK", it surprised me more than anything but that's just the way the day went for me.  That wasn't the first embarrassing thing.

Welcome to the Golf Channel Pro Am Tour!!!  I got my name called out on the first tee, "Welcome to the first tee...Seth Williams from Chandler, Arizona!"  It was really cool, and surreal and then I proceeded to top the ball into the desert.  My second ball, I pulled left into the desert left of the fairway.  I ended up with a 10 on the first hole, not a Snowman but a Bo Derek...a stick and stone.

Needless to say, I ended up last in my flight, which is called the 'Hogan flight'.  Ben Hogan would roll around in his grave if he knew I was in a flight named after him after the way I played.  :)

Wow, it's been a while since I have posted on here.  Here are some updates to my Golf Journal:

  • I have been experiencing some hip pain so I haven't been playing golf as much lately.  I have an appointment on Jan 7, 2013 with a local orthopedic doctor in Chandler, AZ.  I'll let you know how that goes and maybe what exercises they have me do.
  • I joined the Golf Channel Am Tour http://www.gcamtour.com/ this year so I will try to update you all on this experience.
    • My first tournament is Jan 5, and I have to attend even with my hip pain because in the Golf Channel Am Tour you have to pay in advance right when you sign up and if you cancel you don't get all your money back.  That's one complaint I have so far with GCAMTOUR is that you have to sign up way early or it gets full.  One tournament filled up in less than 15 minutes!
  • I've noticed on the Golf Channel they have a program from the TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) and I enjoy this because they break everything down into your physical ability, drills, and practice.
    • For physical ability, they show you tests on how to see if you have any physical limitations, or areas you need to stretch or strengthen.  They give you workout routines and stretching routines to improve those areas.
    • For drills they give you really good drills to overcome the challenges they are talking about in that episode.
    • Practice, practice, practice...they help you learn how to practice.  I like how in one episode they worked the new 'feel' into the golfer's pre-shot routine.
    • Here's a really good drill from the show http://www.mytpi.com/improve-my-game/swing-characteristics/reverse-spine-angle
Sorry this post is all text, I think posts with pictures is better, I'll post some pics from my practice or my rounds.

Celtic Manor, Wales, UK

I got a chance to play the Celtic Manor while I was in Wales for work. The course was beautiful, and the experience was top notch! Celtic Manor was the site of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
